Virginia Earthquake

It's the day after an earthquake here in VA. Talk about exciting. No damage, but I'm finding evidence of dishes (and one glass) askew in the china cabinet. Luckily the doors to the cabinet held and didn't open. The only glass that did fall over is a Sean Taylor #21 12 oz glass from the Washington Redskins. It's a tumbler with a heavy bottom. None of my stemmed crystal glasses fell over. Spooky. At least it made me remember the big guy fondly.

This wasn't my first earthquake, but it was the strongest one I've experienced. For those of you who have never felt one, it's definitely an experience. At least I can prepare for snow blizzards, hurricanes or other other natural disaster, but this just happens. As for animals detecting an earthquake? Not my dog. She was still lying down, but alert, on my bed. Didn't phase her one bit!

What is it that your mind becomes stuck when something like that happens? I've always told myself I'd grab a video camera when something memorable happens. Did I do it? No. Can I remember what I was thinking when it was happening? Yes. Like why aren't the trees swaying when I looked out the window? or Man this is a long earthquake. or I hope the water doesn't slosh out of my husband's aquarium as I'm watching it when I'm not looking out the window.

I could hear the windows creak loudly, the sounds of things falling, but I was never scared. I knew devastating earthquakes don't happen in VA. It was actually cool--until I felt an even bigger jolt towards the end of the trembler. But by the time I thought I should leave the house, it was over.

It was a very long 45 seconds which I thought would stop at about 25 seconds or so.

It definitely made for a memorable day!
